$5 Million Settlement Sought Following Two ABC Store Incidents

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — What began with two missing Samsung Galaxy phones at the Martin Luther King Jr. ABC Store, 554 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Winston-Salem, later escalated into a separate incident in which Derrick Wilson alleges an ABC employee threatened to shoot him.

Wilson says he left both phones on the cashier’s counter while retrieving a larger bottle of Taaka Vodka at the cashier’s direction. When he returned, the phones were gone.

Wilson says a female ABC employee told him she personally witnessed the cashier allow someone else to take the phones from the counter. Independent witness Mr. Tomeken also heard the cashier acknowledge the phones were on the counter and provided a written statement.

Phone case: #2025077, Officer J. Ball.

Wilson says another ABC employee later left the store, approached him while seated, threatened to shoot him and reached toward his back pocket. Threat case: #2626328, Officer Jennings.

Wilson, who is Black/African American, questions whether the matters might have been handled faster had he belonged to another racial or ethnic group.

The Triad Municipal ABC Board’s liability insurer has contacted Wilson regarding Claim #Y00048040. Wilson says he is now in talks with the insurer and hopes the entire matter can be resolved. He stresses this is not simply a $3,000 phone claim. His settlement demand for the overall matter is $5,000,000.

Wilson wrote No More Secrets by Michael Patterson while incarcerated. He says the book was available through distribution reaching about 25,000 bookstores nationwide and received coverage from the Winston-Salem Journal and The Chronicle.

Wilson completed a City of Winston-Salem construction training program, including lead-based paint training, and has automotive body and repair training. He completed barber training and is pre-certified to open a daycare.

His other work includes Shoe Snackz, OfficialShoeSnackz.com, Luxury Street Music and Dodge Ram Grizz V12 Holdings LLC. He has a pending federal application for the combined DODGE RAM™ trademark, USPTO Serial No. 99127778, and is the inventor and patent holder behind the Three Pillow System.

Wilson says he was not looking for trouble and wants both incidents fully investigated and fairly resolved.

The allegations are Wilson’s account and have not been adjudicated in court. The $5 million figure is a settlement demand, not a court award.
